I recently ran a course entitled 'Effective Communication and Team Building for a London based organisation.
Always looking for new ideas new ideas to get old ideas across, I opted for a competitive painting exercise.
Dividing Jack Vittriano's picture of 'The Singing Butler' into 4 equal parts I gave each team of 4 a quarter to paint. (brushes, easels, paints and canvases were supplied)
At the end of 40 minutes they put their four quarters together to see if it looked like the original.
Guess what? It wasn't far out – but the butler had a huge waist on the first quarter and skinny legs on the second quarter while the lady in the red dress had a maroon skirt and a scarlet bodice.
You can see the enjoyment this created from the pictures and the learning points were powerful:
A large project needs collaborative working - communication is key – you must use specialisms in the teams – communicate effectively – all work from the same easel!! (or sing from the same hymn sheet!)
