We run these courses as 'open' courses throughout the year, however they are also available in-house at a very personalized level –either in a group or one to one.

For a sales convention or team meeting, Benchmark can also deliver motivational workshops aimed at large groups wanting a fast, short and sharp session which inspires and enthuses people to try new ideas.

Margaret Hartley of Benchmark recently ran a course entitled ‘Effective Communication and Team Building’ for a charity organisation based in London.

Dividing the 16 trainees per session into 4 main groups they were shown the picture ‘The Laughing Butler’ by Jack Vittriano and told – between them – they would produce the picture between them.

Each team was then given a quarter of the picture to paint (brushes, easels, paints and canvases were supplied) and at the end of 40 minutes invited to put them all together to see if the looked like the original picture.

You can see the results in the pictures – they were really very good – but the exercise brought out some interesting facts:

• you cannot work on your own in a big project – you need to work together
• you need to communicate with each other
• you need to use the specialisms in your team
• you need to make sure you are all working with the same materials/ideas/perspectives
• you need to communicate effectively
